Dr Joseph Sutton

Joseph was born in Stoke-on-Trent, UK, and earned his MSci in Chemistry from the University of Birmingham. His master’s research, conducted in the Dove group, investigated the impact of stereochemistry in click thiol–yne hydrogels. He subsequently completed his PhD in the School of Chemical Engineering at the University of Birmingham, where he developed a scalable process for the chemical recycling of PET using ionic organocatalysts under the supervision of Prof. Joe Wood.

Joseph now works alongside the Dove group on a collaborative project developing thermo-responsive catalyst supports for PET depolymerisation. His research interests centre on sustainable polymer chemistry, catalyst design, and scalable chemical recycling technologies.

Outside the lab, Joseph enjoys outdoor activities such as hiking and mountain biking, as well as playing guitar and board games with friends.
